Sowing & Care (Quick Guide)

Season: Warm-season annual — best sown Feb–Apr and Jun–Aug in North India; in mild climates almost year-round. Avoid frost.
Soil & Site: Loose, fertile, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter; sunny, sheltered location.
Sowing Depth & Spacing: Sow 1.5–2.5 cm deep. Direct sow or start in pots and transplant early (2–3 true leaves). Space plants 30–45 cm apart (45–60 cm for giant types) with rows 60–75 cm apart. For containers, one plant per 12–16 in pot.
Sunlight & Water: Full sun (6–8 hours) for best blooms. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during bud formation; avoid waterlogging. Mulch helps retain moisture.
Support & Feeding: Stake tall stems in windy spots. Feed lightly with compost or balanced fertilizer at early growth and bud stage.
Germination: 5–10 days (best at 20–30 °C).
Bloom Time: 60–90 days from sowing (varies by variety and climate). For cut flowers, harvest when petals just open; for seeds, leave heads to mature and dry on the plant.
