Sowing & Care (Quick Guide)

Season: Cool-season crop — best Sep–Mar in North India; in mild climates almost year-round; avoid peak heat for leafy harvest.
Soil: Loose, friable, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter; level the bed and remove clods.
Sowing Depth & Spacing: Sow 1–2 cm deep; rows 15–20 cm apart; broadcast or line sowing both work. No thinning needed for leafy harvest; for seed crop thin to 8–10 cm.
Sunlight & Water: Full sun to light shade (4–6 hours sun is fine). Keep soil evenly moist; avoid waterlogging.
Germination: 3–7 days (fast in 18–25 °C).
Harvest: Leaves in 20–30 days (cut and come again); seeds in 90–120 days when pods turn yellow-brown and dry.
