Bel Patra — Aegle marmelos (L.) Corrêa (Rutaceae). Common names: Bel, Bael, Bilva, Wood Apple, Bengal Quince, Stone Apple. Native to India and Southeast Asia; sacred tree in Hinduism (offered to Shiva).

Product Description

A medium-sized, slow-growing deciduous tree, 6–12 m (20–40 ft) tall (can reach 18 m) with a short trunk, spreading branches and a rounded crown; bark grey, fissured. Young shoots bear sharp, straight axillary spines 1–2.5 cm long. Leaves are alternate, trifoliate (rarely 5), each leaflet ovate-lanceolate, 5–14 cm × 2–6 cm, with entire to slightly crenulate margins and a pointed tip; pale green and slightly pinkish when young, turning dark green and leathery with age. The classic “Bel patra” is the three-leaflet leaf offered in worship (symbolizes Shiva’s three eyes / trinity). Flowers are fragrant, greenish-white to pale yellow, 1.5–2 cm across, 4–5 petals, borne in short axillary panicles in late spring–summer. Fruit are large, hard-shelled, globose to slightly pyriform, 5–12 cm (up to 20 cm in cultivated forms), with a woody rind turning yellowish-brown when ripe. Pulp is aromatic, orange-yellow, mucilaginous, sweet with a mild tang; contains 10–20 woolly seeds embedded in clear mucilage. Fruits ripen in winter–spring and are used for sharbat, marmalade, medicine.

Quick care: full sun (≥6 hrs). Warm to hot climate 20–35 °C (68–95 °F); drought-hardy once established; USDA 10–12 outdoors (can tolerate brief dips to 5–7 °C / 40–45 °F; deciduous in cool/dry seasons). Soil: deep, well-drained loam or sandy loam; tolerates stiff clay and poor soils, pH 5.5–8. Water regularly during establishment; thereafter keep moderately moist but allow topsoil to dry (1–2 in) between waterings—overwatering causes root rot. Mulch to conserve moisture. Feed once a month (Oct–Jan) with balanced fertilizer or compost; reduce in winter. Prune lightly after fruiting to remove dead/diseased wood and shape; avoid heavy cutting (bears on old wood). Propagate by seeds (cleaned, sown fresh; germinate in 10–12 days), root suckers, or grafting/budding for selected types. Generally pest-free; watch for scale, mealybugs, and leaf spot. Vastu: often planted in north–south direction or center of courtyard; considered auspicious and protective.
