Rhapis Excelsa Palm in 6″ Pot

A slow-growing, clumping fan palm (Arecaceae) native to southern China and northern Vietnam. It forms multiple slender, upright, bamboo-like canes (stems) that are wrapped in brown fiber; as the plant ages the fiber sheds to reveal smooth, ringed trunks. Each cane is topped with glossy, dark-green, palmate (fan-shaped) fronds—about 20–50 cm (8–20 in) across—divided into 5–10 broad, ribbed segments with blunt, slightly toothed tips (a handy ID feature). Indoors it typically reaches 1.2–2 m (4–6 ft) tall and 0.6–1 m (2–3 ft) wide; outdoors in warm climates it can hit 3–4 m (10–13 ft). Spreads gently via underground rhizomes; rarely flowers indoors (small yellow panicles in spring, sometimes followed by tiny white fruits).

Quick care: bright, indirect light is best (tolerates medium to low light and deep shade; too much direct sun yellows/scorches fronds, too little light makes leaves darker and growth slower). Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy—water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 in) feels dry (roughly every 7–10 days in warm months, less in winter); allow excess to drain. Use a well-drained, fertile potting mix (loam/peat + perlite), slightly acidic to neutral. Prefers 15–26 °C (60–80 °F); can handle brief dips to ∼10 °C (50 °F). Average to moderate humidity (40–60 %) is fine; mist if air is very dry (brown tips). Feed monthly spring–early fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Repot every 3–4 years (likes being slightly root-bound); top-dress otherwise. Propagate by division of rhizome offsets. Non-toxic to pets and people, and noted for good air-purifying qualities.
