Chinese Fan Palm in 10″ Pot

A graceful, single-stemmed palm native to East Asia (southern Japan, Taiwan, southern China) that’s popular as a compact indoor specimen. Juvenile plants form a cluster of slender petioles topped with large, roundish fan-shaped fronds—each leaf is divided into many narrow, drooping segments whose tips arch downward, giving a soft “fountain” look. Indoors it stays much smaller (usually 1–2 m over many years); outdoors it can become a medium tree (to 9–15 m).

Quick care: bright, indirect light (young plants like some shade; established plants tolerate several hours of sun), keep soil evenly moist but well-drained (let the top 3–5 cm dry before watering again), average room temps 18–26 °C, and moderate humidity (mist if air is very dry). Feed lightly 2–3 times in spring–summer. Petioles have small spines—handle carefully. Non-toxic and relatively easy-going; trim only brown older fronds near the trunk (never cut the central growing tip).
