Asparagus setaceus ‘Plumosus’ (Plumosa Fern) — Asparagus setaceus (Kunth) Jessop (syn. A. plumosus, Protasparagus setaceus), Asparagaceae. Common names: Lace Fern, Climbing Asparagus, Ferny Asparagus, Plumosa Fern, Feathered Asparagus. Native to moist forests of South Africa (Western Cape to KwaZulu-Natal) and tropical East Africa.
Product Description
A scrambling evergreen perennial that behaves like a delicate vine. It forms a tuberous rootstock that sends up wiry, arching to twining stems 1–3 m (3–10 ft) long (kept much smaller in pots). True leaves are reduced to tiny papery scales; what looks like fine feathery foliage are flattened stem segments called cladodes—needle-like, 4–7 mm × 0.1 mm, borne in clusters of 10–15, giving a soft, lacy, fern-like spray. New growth emerges bright green and matures to deep green. Stems become woody with age and bear sharp, recurved thorns (wear gloves when handling). Small, bell-shaped, greenish-white flowers appear in summer on mature plants, followed by 4–5 mm green berries that ripen to purple-black (toxic if eaten). Not a true fern; it’s a flowering plant related to edible asparagus.
Quick care: bright indirect light to filtered sun (east/north window or partial shade outdoors). Avoid harsh midday sun (scorches the fine cladodes) and deep shade (yellowing, sparse growth). Warm 18–24 °C (65–75 °F); minimum ∼13 °C (55 °F); no frost (dies back below ∼10 °C/50 °F). High humidity preferred (60%+); mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place in a bright bathroom/terrarium—dry air causes browning tips. Soil: loose, loamy, well-draining mix (potting soil 60% + perlite or sand 20% + cocopeat 20%). Keep evenly moist but not soggy—water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry; reduce slightly in winter but don’t let it dry out completely. Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Pinch stem tips to encourage bushiness; provide a small trellis or let it trail from hanging baskets/shelves. Repot every 1–2 years (it gets pot-bound quickly) or divide the root clump in spring. Propagate by division (each piece must have roots and shoots) or by fresh seed from berries. Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs in dry air; root rot if overwatered. Berries are mildly toxic; foliage can cause skin irritation in sensitive people. Great for airy texture in mixed planters, terrariums, and as a filler in cut-flower arrangements.
