Dracaena masoniana f. variegata (syn. Sansevieria masoniana ‘Variegata’). Common names: Variegated Whale Fin Snake Plant, Shark Fin, Mason’s Congo.

Product Description

A rare, slow-growing semi-succulent in the Asparagaceae family, native to the Democratic Republic of Congo. It produces one (sometimes 2–3) huge, upright paddle-shaped leaf per growth point that looks like a whale’s fin—thick, leathery, and waxy. Mature leaves can reach 60–120 cm (2–4 ft) tall and 15–25 cm (6–10 in) wide, with a purple-banded sheath at the base. The variegated form has creamy-yellow to pale yellow margins and streaks that marble into the deep green center; patterns are unique per leaf. Growth is very slow; new leaves emerge from underground rhizomes as pups.

Quick care: bright, indirect light is best to keep variegation strong (tolerates medium/low light, but yellow areas fade and growth stalls; a little gentle morning sun is fine—harsh midday sun can scorch). Water sparingly—let the soil dry out completely (top 5–7 cm), then water deeply and drain; in winter water every 4–6 weeks. Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent/cactus mix (add perlite or sand) and a shallow, wide terracotta pot. Temps 18–27 °C (65–80 °F); average home humidity is fine (no misting). Feed lightly 1–2 times in spring–summer with diluted cactus fertilizer. Repot every 2–3 years; propagate by dividing pups (leaf cuttings usually revert to plain green, so only pups keep variegation). Toxic if ingested—keep away from pets/kids.
