Turtle Vine Basket

A low-growing, mat-forming, trailing succulent herb with very fine, wiry purple-green stems that root at the nodes. Habit is creeping and cascading—only 5–15 cm (2–6 in) tall but trails 30–120 cm (1–4 ft) long; perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, terrariums, or as groundcover in warm climates. Leaves are tiny, fleshy, arranged in two ranks along the stem: ovate to heart-shaped, 1–4 cm × 0.5–1.5 cm, glossy dark green above, often purplish underneath; margins may be slightly scabrid. Cultivars add color—‘Pink Lady’, ‘Pink Panther’, ‘Bianca’ have variegated green/cream/pink/white tones. Flowers are minute, white-hyaline, borne in dense axillary clusters enclosed by leaf sheaths in summer; not showy. Fruit are tiny 2-locular capsules with brown seeds. Fast-growing; fills and spills over a basket in one season.

Quick care: bright indirect light (6+ hrs; east/west window is ideal). Variegated forms need more light to keep color; too much direct sun scorches leaves; low light makes stems leggy and loses variegation. Warm 15–29 °C (60–85 °F); avoid <10 °C (50 °F) and cold drafts. Soil: loose, well-drained mix (potting soil 50% + perlite/succulent mix 50%), pH 5.0–6.5. Water when top 2–5 cm dry—keep lightly moist, never soggy; water thoroughly from the top until it drains. Moderate humidity (40–60%) is fine; mist if air is very dry. Feed monthly in spring–summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer (half strength). Pinch tips to encourage bushiness; trim long trails to shape (use cuttings to propagate). Repot every 1–2 years when root-bound. Propagate easily by stem cuttings (2–3 nodes) in water or moist soil—root quickly at nodes. Watch for mealybugs, aphids, spider mites; overwatering causes root rot. Sap may irritate skin; considered toxic if ingested (keep away from pets/children). Excellent beginner basket plant—creates a lush green/pink curtain in weeks.
