Ocimum tenuiflorum (syn. Ocimum sanctum), commonly called Tulsi or Tulasi.

Product Description

An aromatic, erect, much-branched subshrub in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to tropical and subtropical Asia and widely grown in India (especially in Gurugram and across the subcontinent) for religious, culinary and medicinal use. It reaches about 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) tall, with slender, four-sided, purplish and softly hairy stems. Leaves are simple, ovate-elliptic (1.5–6 cm long), green to purplish, with slightly toothed margins and a pubescent (finely hairy) surface; they’re arranged opposite-decussate (pairs at right angles) and release a strong clove-mint-basil fragrance when crushed. Flowers are small, tubular, pink to lavender, borne in slender terminal racemes (8–12 cm) in whorls—visible as the pale green spikes at the shoot tips in your photo.

Quick care & notes: full sun (6+ hrs) for best growth and essential-oil content; prefers warm temps (20–30 °C) and moist, well-drained soil (avoid waterlogging). Pinch off flower spikes to prolong leafy growth; prune regularly to keep bushy. Often grown as an annual in cooler climates but behaves as a short-lived perennial in warm regions. Considered sacred in Hindu tradition and used in Ayurveda; leaves are edible (used in teas and cooking) and the plant is non-toxic, though the strong aroma can deter pests.
