Product Description

A fast-growing semi-evergreen shrub or small tree, typically 2–6 m (6–20 ft) tall (can reach 8–10 m in the wild; dwarf forms <1 m). Habit is erect and bushy with arching branches. Leaves are opposite, odd-pinnate, 8–25 cm long, with 3–13 leaflets (often 5–9). Leaflets are lanceolate to ovate, 2–10 cm × 1–4 cm, glossy green, sharply serrated, with an acuminate tip and wedge-shaped base. Flowers are borne in terminal racemes/ panicles: large, showy, bright golden-yellow trumpet-shaped corollas 3.5–8 cm long, 5-lobed (weakly two-lipped), often with faint reddish veins in the throat; slightly fragrant. Blooms profusely from spring through autumn (year-round in warm climates). Fruit are narrow, bean-like capsules 10–25 cm long, brown when ripe, splitting to release many flat, papery-winged seeds that disperse by wind. Quick care: full sun (≥6 hrs) for best flowering; tolerates light shade (fewer blooms). Prefers fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil (loam/sand; pH 6–8; avoid heavy waterlogging). Water moderately—keep evenly moist while establishing, then drought-tolerant; allow the top few cm to dry between waterings. Warmth lover (20–35 °C/68–95 °F); hardy USDA 9–11 (evergreen), 8b with dieback; can resprout from base after light frost if roots survive. Feed lightly: balanced slow-release in spring and again in midsummer; compost mulch helps. Prune after flowering to shape, remove spent flowers and seed pods to prolong bloom; can be kept 1.5–2.5 m as a hedge or trained as a small tree. Propagate by seed (germinates in 1–6 weeks) or semi-hardwood cuttings. Generally pest-free; watch for aphids, spider mites, whitefly indoors. Attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds. Can self-seed and naturalize; may be invasive in some tropical
