Shyama Tulsi (Krishna Tulsi) — Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (syn. O. sanctum), Lamiaceae (mint family). Common names: Shyama/Krishna Tulsi, Black Tulsi, Purple Holy Basil. Native to tropical Asia; sacred in Hinduism, associated with Lord Krishna.

Product Description

A fragrant, erect sub-shrub (perennial in tropics, often grown as annual in cooler zones), 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall, sometimes up to 1 m (3 ft). Stems are slender, square, purplish, with fine hairs. Leaves are smaller and narrower than Rama Tulsi—simple, ovate to elliptic, 3–5 cm × 1–2 cm, with slightly toothed margins; color is deep green with strong purplish-bronze tint, darker on the undersides and along veins; the whole plant has a rich purple cast, especially in sun. Crushed foliage releases a strong, spicy-clove aroma (higher eugenol content than Rama). Flowers are borne in slender terminal racemes (spikes) 5–15 cm long; small, purplish-pink, two-lipped, arranged in close whorls. Blooms mainly in late summer–autumn. Seeds are tiny, brown nutlets. Compared to Rama Tulsi (bright green, milder sweet-herby flavor), Shyama has a sharper, warmer, more pungent taste and stronger medicinal profile in Ayurveda.

Quick care: full sun (6–8 hrs direct; more sun = deeper purple). Warm 20–30 °C (68–86 °F); hardy outdoors in USDA 10–12; in colder zones grow in pots and bring indoors before frost (below ∼10 °C / 50 °F). Soil: fertile, well-drained loam with organic matter; pH 6.0–7.5. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged—water when the top 2–3 cm dry; reduce in winter. Feed monthly in growing season with balanced organic fertilizer/compost. Pinch shoot tips regularly to encourage bushy growth and delay flowering; remove flower spikes if you want more leaf production (or leave for seed/bees). Space 30–45 cm apart. Propagate by seed (light-dependent germinator—press seeds on the surface, keep warm 21–24 °C, germinate in 5–10 days) or by 10–15 cm softwood cuttings in water/soil. Watch for aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and leaf rollers; avoid wetting foliage late in the day to prevent fungal issues. Traditionally used for respiratory support (cough/cold), stress/adaptogen, immunity, and as a purifying household plant; leaves are used in tea/kadha. Considered very auspicious in puja; often planted in courtyards in a Tulsi pot/altar.
