Asparagus racemosus Willd. Common names: Shatavari, Wild Asparagus, Buttermilk Root. Family: Asparagaceae.

Product Description

A perennial, climbing to scrambling woody vine native to tropical and subtropical India, Sri Lanka, southern China, and parts of Africa and Australia; common in lowland and montane forests up to ∼2,200 m. The plant produces a woody, branched stem (to 7 m/23 ft) armed with short, hooked spines. True leaves are reduced to minute scales; the photosynthetic “leaves” are soft, needle-like cladodes (modified stems) in feathery clusters. Roots are the important part—fascicled, succulent, tuberous, spindle-shaped, 5–30 cm long, silvery-white, forming a dense cluster (the “hundred roots” of the name). Small, fragrant white flowers appear in axillary racemes (July–August in its native range), followed by round, red to black berries.

Traditional uses: In Ayurveda it’s the “Queen of herbs,” a rasayana (rejuvenative) especially for the female reproductive system—used as a galactagogue (promotes lactation), menstrual regulator, adaptogen, demulcent, digestive, and immunomodulator. Major actives are steroidal saponins (shatavarins I–IV), flavonoids, polysaccharides, and mucilage.

Quick cultivation: full sun to light shade (prefers semi-shade/light woodland). Hardy USDA 8–11 (frost-tender; dies back in cold). Likes fertile, sandy-loam to light clay soils with good drainage; tolerates poor, rocky soils if drainage is excellent. Keep soil moderately moist but not waterlogged; established plants tolerate short drought. Space ∼60 cm apart; propagate by root suckers/offsets or seeds. Harvest tuberous roots after 18–24 months; used dried or as powder. Generally pest-free; occasional aphids/mites. No major hazards reported.
