Shami — Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce (family Fabaceae/Mimosoideae). Common names: Shami, Khejri, Jand, Jammi, Banni, Sami, Chhikur. Native to arid western and southern Asia (Thar Desert of Rajasthan/Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Arabian Peninsula); state tree of Rajasthan.

Product Description

A slow-growing, drought-hardy, medium evergreen tree 3–5 m (10–16 ft) tall (up to 9–10 m in ideal conditions), with a deep taproot. Bark is gray-white, rough, peeling in papery flakes, with dark horizontal patches; young branches are zig-zag, pubescent, and armed with scattered, conical thorns at the internodes. Leaves are bipinnate: 1–3 pairs of pinnae, each with 7–15 pairs of small oblong leaflets (4–15 mm long), dark green to bluish-green, with a tiny point at the tip; foliage is feathery and sparse, letting light through. Flowers are tiny, creamy-yellow to pale white, in short cylindrical spikes (5–10 cm) in leaf axils, blooming March–May/June. Pods are slender, flattened, 8–19 cm long, constricted between seeds, with a triangular beak at the tip; seeds are brown, 5–10 per pod. Highly tolerant of heat, drought, salinity, and alkaline soils; indicative of a deep water table.

Quick care: full sun (≥6–8 hrs) essential; shade makes it lanky. Prefers sandy to loamy, well-drained soil; tolerates poor, saline/alkaline soils; avoid waterlogging. Water sparingly—once established, extremely drought-tolerant; water deeply every 2–3 weeks in extreme heat, less in winter; overwatering causes root rot. Thrives in hot, dry climates (20–45 °C); frost-tender when young, hardy to light frost once mature (USDA 9–11). Feed sparingly: a handful of compost or slow-release fertilizer in spring; too much nitrogen reduces stress tolerance. Prune lightly to remove dead/thorny branches and shape; avoid heavy pruning. Propagate by seed (scarify/soak overnight, germinate in 7–21 days) or by root suckers/cuttings. Generally pest-free; occasional pod borers or leaf-eaters. Revered in Indian tradition (worshipped on Dussehra/Vijayadashami); leaves/pods are fodder; bark and pods have medicinal uses in Ayurveda.
