Rama Tulsi (Shri Tulsi) — Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (syn. O. sanctum), Lamiaceae (mint family). Common names: Rama Tulsi, Green Holy Basil, Bright Tulsi. Native to tropical Asia; revered in Hindu tradition and associated with Lord Rama

Product Description

An erect, aromatic sub-shrub (perennial in the tropics, often grown as an annual in cooler climates), typically 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall, sometimes up to 1 m (3 ft). Stems are square, slender, green, with fine hairs. Leaves are the key difference from Shyama: bright green, ovate to elliptic, 3–6 cm × 1.5–3 cm, with slightly toothed margins and a softer, milder fragrance—sweet, herbaceous with a light clove note (lower eugenol than Krishna). Foliage is lush and light green, not purplish. Flowers appear in slender terminal racemes 5–15 cm long; small, two-lipped, white to pale lavender-pink, enclosed by green to purplish sepals. Blooms mainly in late summer–autumn; bees and butterflies love them. Seeds are tiny brown nutlets. Compared to Shyama (darker, more pungent), Rama is considered “sattvic”—cooling, gentle, calming, and is the form most commonly used for daily worship and teas.

Quick care: full sun (6–8 hrs; tolerates light afternoon shade in very hot climates). Warm 20–30 °C (68–86 °F); hardy outdoors in USDA 10–12; in colder zones grow in pots and bring indoors before frost (below ∼10 °C / 50 °F). Soil: fertile, well-drained loam with organic matter; pH 6.0–7.5. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged—water when the top 2–3 cm dry; reduce watering in cool weather. Feed monthly with compost or balanced organic fertilizer (avoid high nitrogen, which reduces essential oils). Pinch shoot tips regularly once the plant is 15–20 cm tall to encourage bushiness and delay flowering; remove flower spikes if you want more leaf production (or leave for pollinators/seed). Space 30–45 cm apart. Propagate by seed (surface-sow; needs light to germinate; warm 21–24 °C, sprouts in 5–14 days) or 10–15 cm softwood cuttings in water/soil. Watch for aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, Japanese beetles; avoid wetting foliage late in the day to prevent fungal leaf spots. Uses: fresh/dried leaves for tea (kadha), immunity support, respiratory comfort, stress adaptogen; offered in daily puja to Vishnu/Lakshmi. Rama Tulsi is considered especially auspicious for household planting (courtyard or Tulsi altar).
