Rain Lily — genus Zephyranthes (incl. closely related Habranthus). Family: Amaryllidaceae. Common names: Rain Lily, Zephyr Lily, Fairy Lily, Magic Lily, Atamasco Lily. Native to the Americas—from southeastern USA and Mexico through Central America to South America; widely naturalized in the tropics.

Product Description

Small bulbous perennials with grass-like foliage. Bulbs are small (1–3 cm), round, with papery tunics. Leaves are basal, narrow, linear to strap-shaped, 10–30 cm (4–12 in) long, 2–8 mm wide, bright green, often evergreen in warm zones or deciduous where cooler. Flower stalks (scapes) are slender, leafless, 10–30 cm tall, each bearing a single upward-facing, funnel- to crocus-shaped bloom (some species 2–3). Tepals (6) open flat or cupped, 2.5–10 cm across; colors include white, yellow, pink, rose, peach, and bicolors, often with a contrasting throat. Blooms appear quickly after rain (hence the name) from late spring through fall (species-dependent), each flower lasting 1–3 days but appearing in flushes. Fruit is a small capsule with flat black seeds.

Quick care: full sun to light afternoon shade (≥4–6 hrs sun for best bloom; part shade in hottest climates). Prefers moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil—loam with compost/sand; tolerates sand or clay if drainage is good. Water regularly during growth, keep evenly moist; allow top 2–3 cm to dry between waterings. Tolerates brief drought, but flowering is triggered by a wet–dry cycle—dry spells followed by deep watering or rain bring blooms. Hardy USDA 7–11 (some species to zone 7 with mulch; zone 9–11 for tender ones). Feed lightly: balanced bulb fertilizer or compost in early spring; avoid high nitrogen (promotes leaves over flowers). Plant bulbs 5–8 cm (2–3 in) deep, 5–10 cm apart, with the neck at/just below soil level. Best left undisturbed to form clumps; divide every 3–4 years when crowded. In cold zones, lift bulbs before first frost, store cool and dry, or grow in containers and overwinter indoors. Generally pest-free; watch for slugs/snails and occasional bulb rot in soggy soil. Great for borders, rock gardens, edging, containers, and naturalizing in lawns/rain gardens.
