Raat Rani — Cestrum nocturnum L. (Solanaceae). Common names: Night-blooming Jasmine/Jessamine, Queen/Lady of the Night, Hasna Hena. Native to the West Indies, Mexico, Central America; widely cultivated in South Asia.

Product Description

An evergreen, sprawling woody shrub (vine-like in habit) reaching 2–4 m (6–13 ft) tall and 1.5–2 m wide; can be trained as a hedge or on a trellis. Branches are slender, arching, with smooth bark. Leaves are simple, alternate, glossy dark green, lanceolate to narrow-ovate, 6–20 cm × 2–4.5 cm, entire, with a short petiole (0.8–2 cm). Flowers are borne in axillary cymose clusters: slender tubular corollas 2–2.5 cm long, greenish-white to creamy-white, with 5 acute, recurved lobes. Buds open at dusk and close by morning; they release an intense, sweet-musky perfume after sunset (can carry tens of metres). Blooms repeatedly through warm weather (spring–fall in tropics, year-round in mild climates). Fruit are small, round, white berries that ripen to dark purple-black; all parts, especially berries, are toxic (glycoalkaloids) to people and pets.

Quick care: full sun to partial shade (≥4–6 hrs sun for best flowering; in very hot climates give afternoon shade). Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil (loam with compost + sand/perlite; pH 6–7.5). Water regularly—keep soil lightly moist; reduce in winter; avoid waterlogging (root rot). Warmth lover 18–30 °C (65–86 °F); hardy USDA 9–11 (tolerates brief dips to ~–5 °C/23 °F when established, but protect from frost). Feed every 4–6 weeks in growing season with balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or compost; stop in winter. Prune after a flowering flush to shape and encourage branching; remove spent flower clusters and berries (prevents self-seeding). Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in summer or by seeds (berries). Generally pest-free; watch for whiteflies, aphids, spider mites in dry conditions. Ideal near windows, patios, entrances where the evening fragrance can be enjoyed; can be invasive in some regions—check local rules.
