Ponytail Palm — Beaucarnea recurvata (Lem.) Lem. (syn. Nolina recurvata), Asparagaceae (subfamily Nolinoideae). Common names: Elephant’s Foot, Bottle Palm, Pony Tail Plant. Native to arid/semiarid scrub and low deciduous forests of eastern Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Puebla). Not a true palm.

Product Description

A slow-growing evergreen perennial succulent with a distinctive water-storing base. Indoors it reaches 1–2 m (3–6 ft) tall (wild trees 8–9 m/26–30 ft). The signature feature is the swollen caudex—bulbous, grey-brown, bark cracking with age—tapering into a slender trunk that may branch with maturity (old specimens can be 3–4 m across at the base). At the tip(s) is a fountain-like tuft of long, narrow, leathery leaves 0.5–1.8 m (2–6 ft) × 1–2 cm, dark green, strap-shaped, with recurved (curly) tips and minutely serrated margins (handle carefully). Leaves arch outward and downward, looking like a ponytail. Rarely flowers indoors; mature outdoor plants (10+ years) send up large panicles of tiny creamy-white flowers in late spring–summer, followed by small capsules. Long-lived—can survive >100 years and tolerate decades of benign neglect.

Quick care: bright light—full sun to bright indirect (south/west window); tolerates lower light but grows slower and looser. Warm 18–27 °C (65–80 °F); avoid <10 °C (50 °F) for long periods (damage below ∼7 °C/45 °F). Soil: very well-drained, sandy cactus/succulent mix (potting mix 50% + coarse sand/perlite/pumice 50%); pH 6.0–7.5. Water deeply when the top 5–7 cm (2–3 in) are completely dry—usually every 2–4 weeks in active growth, every 4–6 weeks in winter; the caudex stores water, so underwatering is safer than overwatering. Do not let water sit on the caudex or in saucers (rot). Low humidity (30–50%) is fine; no misting. Feed 2–3× in spring–summer with diluted balanced or succulent fertilizer; none in winter. Repot only every 3–5 years (likes being root-bound); use a shallow, heavy pot with drainage holes to prevent tipping. Propagate by offsets (“pups”) that appear at the base—separate in spring, let callus 1–2 days, plant in dry mix; also from seed (slow). Pests uncommon: watch for mealybugs, scale, spider mites. Non-toxic to pets (though leaf edges are sharp). Great architectural houseplant, patio container (zones 10–11), or xeriscape specimen.
