Narangi — Citrus reticulata Blanco (Rutaceae). Common names: Narangi, Santra, Kamala, Mandarin orange, Tangerine, Kinnow (local variants). Native to Southeast Asia/China; widely cultivated in India.

Product Description

A small, evergreen citrus tree or large shrub, typically 3–7 m (10–20 ft) tall (kept smaller in pots). Rounded, bushy crown with slender, slightly thorny branches (many modern selections nearly thornless). Leaves are glossy dark green, lanceolate to ovate, 5–10 cm long, with narrowly winged petioles and a characteristic citrus scent when crushed. Flowers are borne singly or in small clusters in spring (and sometimes again in autumn): small, white, star-shaped, 5-petalled, intensely fragrant. Fruit are flattened-round, 5–8 cm across, with thin, loose, bright orange peel that peels easily (“easy-peeler”). Segments are juicy, sweet to sweet-tart, often with a few seeds (seedless in some cultivars). Harvest Nov–Feb in India; fruit turn orange as they ripen.

Quick care: full sun (≥6–8 hrs; essential for fruiting). Warm 20–35 °C (68–95 °F); USDA 9–11 outdoors; can tolerate brief dips to –2 to –5 °C (28–23 °F) but fruit and young growth are damaged—protect from frost. Soil: fertile, well-drained loam or sandy loam, pH 6.0–7.0; avoid waterlogging. Water regularly—keep soil evenly moist but not soggy; deep watering 1–2× weekly (more in heat); container plants need more frequent watering (don’t let roots sit in water). Feed 3–4 times a year with citrus fertilizer (high N + micronutrients Fe, Zn, Mn) in late winter, late spring, and midsummer; add compost yearly. Prune lightly in late winter/early spring after harvest: remove dead/diseased wood, suckers, and open the canopy for airflow; avoid heavy pruning. Protect from leaf miners, aphids, scale, whiteflies, mites; watch for greening (HLB) and canker—use clean stock and good sanitation. Propagate by grafting onto rootstock (sour orange, Rangpur lime) for best vigor; seedlings are variable. Great as backyard fruit tree, patio container, or small orchard; attracts bees.
