Portulaca grandiflora Hook. Common names: Moss Rose, Rose Moss, Sun Rose, Eleven-o’clock, Mexican Rose. Family: Portulacaceae. Native to hot, dry plains of Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay (widely naturalized).

Product Description

A low-growing, fast annual (short-lived perennial in USDA 9–11) that forms a dense, moss-like mat. Height 8–30 cm (3–12 in), spread 25–45 cm (10–18 in) or more; prostrate to slightly ascending reddish stems branch near the base. Leaves are fleshy, cylindrical/needle-like (up to 2.5 cm/1 in long), bright green, borne alternately or in small clusters; tiny whitish hairs appear at leaf axils. From late spring to frost, saucer-shaped flowers (2.5–4 cm/1–1.5 in across) sit above the foliage in terminal clusters—single, semi-double, or double, with crepe-paper petals in red, pink, magenta, orange, yellow, salmon, white, and bicolors. Flowers open only in bright sun (close at night and on cloudy/rainy days, though newer hybrids stay open longer). Uses both C4 and CAM photosynthesis, making it very drought- and heat-tolerant.

Quick care: full sun (≥6–8 hrs) is essential for abundant bloom; shade = leggy, fewer flowers. Needs poor to average, sandy or rocky, well-drained soil (pH tolerant); excellent drainage is critical—heavy clay or soggy soil causes crown rot. Water sparingly: allow top 2–5 cm (1–2 in) to dry between waterings; established plants are very drought-tolerant but perform best with a deep weekly soak in hot weather. Thrives in heat and low humidity; not frost-hardy—plant after last frost. Feed lightly (if at all): a little balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting or a monthly dilute feed is plenty; over-fertilizing gives foliage at the expense of flowers. Sow seeds directly after frost or start indoors 6–8 weeks early (light aids germination); also roots easily from stem cuttings. Deadhead optional (self-cleans), but prevents unwanted self-seeding. Problems: aphids and slugs occasionally; otherwise pest-free. Great for rock gardens, edging, borders, containers, hanging baskets, and walls.
