Mint / Pudina — Mentha spp. (Lamiaceae). Common culinary types in India: Spearmint (M. spicata), Peppermint (M. × piperita, a spearmint × watermint hybrid), and Field mint (M. arvensis). The everyday kitchen “pudina” is usually spearmint. Native to Europe/Mediterranean; widely naturalized in India.
Product Description
A fast-growing, aromatic perennial herb with square stems and a creeping habit. Height 30–90 cm (1–3 ft); spread 60–150 cm (2–5 ft) via vigorous underground and surface runners (stolons/rhizomes) that root at nodes—can be invasive if not contained. Leaves are opposite, simple, 3–7 cm × 1–3 cm, ovate to lanceolate, toothed margins, bright to dark green (some cultivars tinged purple), often crinkled; surface dotted with oil glands that release the cool menthol/spearmint scent when crushed. Stems are green to purplish, hairy to smooth. Flowers are tiny, lilac-purple to white, borne in dense terminal spikes/whorls in summer; not very showy but attract bees and beneficial insects. Roots are fibrous and shallow; the plant regrows readily from cuttings and divisions.
Quick care: partial sun to full sun (4–6 hrs direct is ideal; in very hot climates give afternoon shade to prevent scorch). Prefers cool to warm 15–25 °C (60–77 °F); hardy in USDA 5–9 (dies back in hard frost but resprouts from roots). Soil: rich, moist, well-drained loam with organic matter; pH 6.0–7.5; tolerates clay if drainage is good. Keep soil consistently moist—don’t let it dry out completely; water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry. In pots use a 20–30 cm (8–12 in) wide container to contain spread; add a saucer in hot weather. Feed lightly monthly with balanced organic fertilizer/compost; too much nitrogen reduces oil concentration. Pinch shoot tips regularly to encourage bushy growth and delay flowering (leaves turn slightly bitter after blooming). Harvest sprigs 5–10 cm from the top; frequent harvesting keeps it compact. Divide/root-bound clumps every 1–2 years in spring. Propagate easily by stem cuttings in water/soil or by separating rooted runners. Watch for aphids, spider mites, mint rust, and powdery mildew; ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering late in the day. Uses: chutneys, raita, tea, mojitos, garnish, digestive aid; cooling menthol aroma.
