Kochia — Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott (syn. Kochia scoparia), Amaranthaceae (formerly Chenopodiaceae). Common names: Summer cypress, Burning Bush, Fireball, Mexican Fireweed, Belvedere, Mock cypress. Native to Eurasia (Europe, temperate Asia); introduced and widely naturalized in North America, Australia, and elsewhere.

Product Description

A fast-growing, tap-rooted summer annual that forms a densely branched, upright, bushy “shrub” 0.5–2 m (1.5–6.5 ft) tall (ornamental cultivars often 0.5–1 m). Habit is pyramidal to rounded, with a soft, airy, feathery texture—hence “summer cypress.” Stems are slender, green to reddish, finely hairy. Leaves are alternate, narrow, linear to lanceolate, 2.5–5 cm × 3–6 mm, soft, gray-green to blue-green during growth, turning brilliant red, orange, or purplish in late summer–autumn (the “burning bush” effect). Leaves are untoothed, with soft hairs along margins and undersides; young plants start with a basal rosette of wider leaves. Flowers are tiny, inconspicuous, green, petal-less, borne in leaf axils and short spikes (July–October). Fruit is a small utricle; mature dry plant breaks off at the base and tumbles as a tumbleweed, dispersing seeds. Root system is a deep taproot (up to 3–5 m) with fibrous laterals; tolerates drought and saline soils.

Quick care (ornamental use): full sun (6+ hrs) for compact form and best autumn color; tolerates light shade but becomes open. Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil; tolerates poor, rocky, alkaline, and saline soils; pH 6.0–8.5. Sow seed in spring after last frost (or early indoors at 18–20 °C); light aids germination—do not cover deeply. Germination 7–14 days. Thin seedlings to 40–50 cm spacing. Water moderately during establishment; once rooted, very drought-tolerant but looks best with occasional watering. No fertilizer usually needed; a light organic feed in spring is enough. No pruning needed—can lightly clip to shape for denser habit. Pests/diseases rarely serious (occasional aphids/mealybugs). Note: can self-seed aggressively and become weedy/invasive in arid regions; seeds short-lived (1 year). Toxic to livestock in large amounts (nitrates, oxalates, saponins); not recommended as sole forage. Uses: seasonal bedding, borders, mass planting, pots, erosion control on poor soils; spectacular autumn color in formal gardens (e.g., Hitachi Seaside Park, Japan).
