Karonda — Carissa carandas L. (Apocynaceae). Common names: Karonda, Karvanda, Koromcha, Bengal currant, Carandas plum, Christ’s thorn. Native to India and Sri Lanka; naturalized across South and Southeast Asia.

Product Description

A hardy, evergreen, spiny shrub (occasionally a small tree or climber) that typically grows 2–4 m (6–13 ft) tall and wide; left untrained it can scramble up to 10–12 m. Branches are many, wide-spreading, forming a dense canopy, armed with sharp, forked spines 2–5 cm long that make it an excellent hedge. Leaves are opposite, glossy dark green above, paler beneath, broadly ovate to oblong with a short pointed tip, 3–7 cm × 1.5–4 cm; young leaves emerge reddish. All parts exude milky latex when cut. Flowers are borne in terminal cymes (usually 3 per cluster) through spring–summer (in tropics can bloom intermittently year-round): small, tubular, 5-lobed, white (sometimes pink-tinged), ∼1–2 cm, star-shaped, sweetly fragrant—strongest at night; pollinated by insects/moths. Fruit are berry-sized, round to ovoid, 1–2.5 cm long, in clusters of 3–10. Skin is smooth and thin, ripening from green → pinkish-red → deep red-purple to near black. Pulp is juicy, pink to red, acidic and astringent when unripe (used for pickles/chutneys), turning sweet-tart when fully ripe; 2–8 small brown seeds inside. Fruiting in North India July–September.

Quick care: full sun (≥6 hrs) for best fruiting; tolerates light shade. Very heat and drought tolerant once established; prefers warm 25–35 °C (77–95 °F); USDA 9–11 outdoors; sensitive to frost—protect below ∼5 °C (41 °F). Soil: adaptable—sandy loam, laterite, alluvial sand, even rocky ground; best in well-drained loam, pH 6–7.5. Water moderately—keep moist during establishment, then water when top 5–7 cm dry; avoid waterlogging. Feed with balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks in growing season; add compost yearly. Prune after fruiting to shape and thin dense growth; excellent for hedges and security barriers. Propagate by seed (sown Aug–Sep; bears in 2 years), semi-hardwood cuttings, air-layering, budding/inarching. Generally pest-free; watch for aphids/mealybugs on new growth. Fruit are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants; used fresh, in pickles, jams, squashes, and traditional medicine.
