Ilaichi / Cardamom — Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton, Zingiberaceae (ginger family). Common names: Green cardamom, True cardamom, Choti elaichi. Native to the moist evergreen forests of the Western Ghats (Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka; now also grown in Guatemala, Tanzania.

Product Description

A perennial, clump-forming herb with thick, fleshy rhizomes and upright leafy shoots (pseudostems) 2–4 m (6–13 ft) tall outdoors (60–80 cm in pots). Leaves are alternate in two ranks, lance-shaped (linear-lanceolate), 40–60 cm × 5–10 cm, dark green, glossy, with long pointed tips; they release a warm, citrusy-spicy aroma when rubbed. Flowering shoots are separate, shorter, and emerge from the base—sprawling panicles 30–60 cm long that creep along or just above the ground. Flowers are small, white to pale lilac, with a purple-veined lip. The fruit is the prized part: a three-sided, ovoid capsule (pod) 1–2 cm long, green when fresh, turning yellow-green as it matures, containing 15–20 tiny black-brown seeds. The seeds are highly aromatic (terpinyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, linalool) and are the “queen of spices.” Commercial cultivars include ‘Malabar’ (shorter, smaller pods), ‘Mysore’ (taller, larger pods), and ‘Vazhukka’ (hybrid).

Quick care: warm, humid, and shady—mimic tropical understory. Ideal temps 18–35 °C (65–95 °F) with humidity >60%; avoid cold drafts and temps below ∼15 °C (59 °F) (damage below 10 °C/50 °F). Light: bright, filtered light or 40–60% shade; no direct midday sun (scorches leaves). Indoors, place near an east window or under a grow light; keep out of harsh sun. Soil: rich, humus-loamy, slightly acidic pH 5.5–6.8, very well-drained yet moisture-retentive; add compost/leaf mold. Keep soil consistently moist (never soggy); water when the top 2–3 cm dry, and mist leaves 2–3×/week to raise humidity. Use a pebble tray under the pot. Feed twice a month in growing season with balanced or high-nitrogen fertilizer; top-dress with compost annually. Propagate by dividing rhizomes in spring (easiest) or by fresh seed (soak 24 hrs, surface-sow, warm 22–25 °C, germinates in 2–3 weeks). First harvest after 2–3 years; pods are picked just before fully ripe (green, seeds inside are black, not white). Watch for thrips, mites, root rot, and leaf spot—ensure good airflow and avoid waterlogging. In non-tropical climates grow in large pots (≥25 cm deep) and move indoors in winter; indoor plants are usually grown for foliage only (rarely flower/fruit without constant tropical conditions). Uses: spice in sweets, chai, biryani; essential oil in perfumes and medicine; leaves also aromatic for flavoring.
