Heirloom Lemon — Citrus × limon (L.) Osbeck (Rutaceae). Common names: Heirloom/Desi Lemon, Kagzi Nimbu, Lisbon/Eureka-type lemon (old lines). Likely origin in NE India/SE Asia; true lemons are a hybrid of bitter orange × citron.

Product Description

A medium, evergreen citrus shrub or small tree, 3–6 m (10–20 ft) tall (kept 1–2 m in pots). Habit is upright to spreading with slender, somewhat thorny branches (older heirloom types often have thorns). Leaves are glossy dark green, elliptic-ovate, 6–10 cm long, with slightly winged petioles and a citrus scent when crushed. Flowers are solitary or in small clusters, 2–3 cm, white with a purple tinge on the undersides, very fragrant, produced mainly in spring (and sporadically year-round in warm climates). Fruit are oval to elliptical, 5–10 cm, with thin to medium skin that ripens bright yellow; heirloom lines (e.g., Kagzi) have very thin, papery peel, abundant juice, high acidity, and many seeds (10–20). Pulp is pale yellow-green, intensely sour and aromatic; zest is high in essential oils. Trees are precocious and productive, often bearing several flushes per year in warm zones.

Quick care: full sun (≥6–8 hrs; best for fruit set). Warm 20–32 °C (68–90 °F); USDA 9–11 outdoors; protect below –1 to –2 °C (28–30 °F) — move containers indoors in winter. Soil: well-drained sandy/loam, pH 5.5–7.0; avoid waterlogging. Water deeply and evenly—keep soil moist but let the top 5–7 cm dry between waterings; container plants need more frequent watering but must drain freely. Feed 3–4 times a year with citrus fertilizer (high N + micronutrients Fe, Zn, Mn) in late winter, late spring, and midsummer; add compost annually. Mulch 5–8 cm, keeping away from trunk. Prune lightly in late winter after harvest: remove dead/diseased wood, suckers, and crossing branches; open the canopy for light and airflow. Watch for leaf miners, aphids, scale, citrus psylla, mites, and diseases like canker/greasy spot; maintain hygiene and airflow. Propagate by grafting onto sour orange or rough lemon rootstock for vigor and disease tolerance; seeds give variable seedlings. Great for kitchen gardens, patio containers, and traditional uses (juice, pickles, zest).
