Hand Cultivator

The head is usually iron or stainless steel (stainless resists rust and works better in clay/rocky soil), with tines 7–10 cm (3–4 in) long, spaced to rake through soil and catch weeds. The handle is wood (often ash or hardwood), plastic, or ergonomic rubber/foam grip; some have a hang hole for storage. Weight ∼0.2–0.5 kg. Durable models have powder-coated or forged heads to prevent bending.

Use: scratch the top 2–5 cm of soil to break crust, incorporate compost/fertilizer, loosen compacted spots around delicate plants, and uproot shallow weeds without disturbing roots. Works well in raised beds, pots, and tight spaces between plants where a long-handled tool won’t fit. Grip comfortably to reduce wrist fatigue; pull or push the tines through soil in a raking motion. Often sold alone or in 3-piece sets with a trowel and fork. Not for deep digging—use a spade or long cultivator for that.
