Foxtail Fern — Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myersii’ (syn. A. densiflorus ‘Myers’, A. meyeri), Asparagaceae. Common names: Foxtail Fern, Myers Fern, Plume Asparagus. Native to South Africa (not a true fern; despite the name it’s a flowering plant in the asparagus family).

Product Description

A clump-forming, evergreen perennial with arching, upright plumes that look like fluffy green foxtails. It reaches 45–60 cm (18–24 in) tall and spreads 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) wide; in baskets it mounds up and cascades gracefully over the rim. “Leaves” are actually tiny needle-like cladodes (modified stems) packed densely along each stem, giving a soft, bottlebrush texture; color is bright lime-green to deep emerald. Older stems can develop small, sharp spines at the base. In late spring–summer it bears tiny, fragrant white to pale pink flowers tucked in the foliage, followed by small round red berries (ornamental but toxic if eaten). Underground are fleshy tuberous roots that store water, making it drought-tolerant once established.

Quick care for a basket: bright indirect light to part sun (morning sun is ideal; avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch; too little light makes it leggy). Warm 18–27 °C (65–80 °F); hardy outdoors in USDA 9–11 (dies back in frost but regrows from roots in zone 8b). Soil: loose, well-drained mix (potting soil 50% + perlite/coarse sand 25% + compost 25%); pH 6.0–7.0; ensure drainage holes. Water moderately—keep soil lightly moist in spring–summer, letting the top 3–5 cm dry between waterings; reduce in winter. Tuberous roots hate soggy soil—overwatering causes rot. Prefers moderate humidity; mist occasionally in dry indoor air. Feed monthly in growing season with balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength, e.g., 10-10-10). Trim yellow/old fronds at the base; cut back woody stems in early spring to refresh. Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound (roots can split pots). Propagate by division of clumps in spring. Watch for spider mites and mealybugs indoors; generally pest-free. Toxic to pets/kids if berries or foliage are eaten; handle with care as mature stems have tiny thorns. Excellent for hanging baskets, containers, borders, and adds soft, architectural texture.
