Elephant Bush — Portulacaria afra Jacq. (family Didiereaceae; formerly Portulacaceae). Common names: Elephant Bush, Elephant’s Food, Porkbush, Spekboom, Dwarf Jade (not related to Crassula ovata). Native to arid/semi-arid rocky scrub of South Africa (Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, north to Limpopo, Eswatini, Mozambique).

Product Description

A perennial evergreen succulent shrub with woody, branching stems. In the wild it can reach 2.5–5 m (8–15 ft) tall (sometimes 3.7–4.5 m), with a spread of 1–2 m; in cultivation it’s usually kept much smaller (0.3–1 m indoors, 1–2 m outdoors). Young stems are reddish-brown and flexible, becoming grayish-brown and trunk-like with age. Leaves are opposite, small, round to obovate, 1–2 cm long, thick, glossy green (variegated forms have cream/white margins), borne on short petioles; they store water. Tiny star-shaped flowers (2–3 mm) in clusters of pink to lavender appear at branch tips in late spring–summer, but are rare in cultivation. Fruit is a small capsule. A notable carbon sequesterer: can switch between C3 and CAM photosynthesis.

Quick care: bright light—full sun to bright indirect (≥4–6 hrs). Outdoors give morning sun and light afternoon shade in very hot climates; indoors place near a sunny window. Tolerates lower light but becomes leggy. Prefers very well-drained, gritty soil (cactus/succulent mix: 50 % potting mix + 50 % sand/perlite/pumice). Water using “soak & dry”: water thoroughly, then let soil dry completely (top 3–5 cm dry; deeper dryness for larger pots). Frequency: every 7–14 days in warm growing season, reduce in winter (monthly or less). Leaves wrinkle slightly when thirsty; overwatering causes leaf drop and root rot. Warmth-loving (18–27 °C/65–80 °F); hardy USDA 9–11; protect below ∼4–7 °C (40 °F); not frost-tolerant. Feed lightly: diluted balanced or cactus fertilizer once in spring and once in midsummer. Prune anytime to shape, control size, or encourage branching (cut above a node). Repot every 2–3 years in spring. Propagate easily from stem cuttings (let callus 1–2 days, then plant in dry mix). Pests few: mealybugs, scale, spider mites (especially indoors). Excellent for containers, hanging baskets (trailing forms), bonsai, rock gardens, xeriscapes. Non-toxic to pets; edible leaves (tart, used in salads in its native range).
