Bougainvillea — genus Bougainvillea (most commonly B. glabra, B. spectabilis, and hybrids B. × buttiana). Family: Nyctaginaceae (four-o’clock). Native to South America (Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina); now pan-tropical/subtropical ornamental worldwide.

Product Description

A woody, evergreen to semi-deciduous vine, shrub, or scrambler with spiny stems. Size varies by species/training: 1–12 m (3–40 ft) tall/long; dwarfs stay 0.5–2 m. Stems are arching, often zig-zag, armed with sharp, recurved thorns; bark grayish. Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 4–13 cm long and 2–6 cm wide, glossy green to dark green, sometimes slightly hairy. The showy “flowers” are actually colorful, papery bracts (3 or 6) surrounding tiny tubular true flowers (white to cream, ∼0.5 cm). Bracts come in magenta, purple, red, pink, orange, yellow, white, and bicolors; they persist for weeks, giving long-lasting color. Blooms in flushes year-round in the tropics; in subtropics, mainly spring–autumn with cycles of 4–6 weeks. Fruit is a narrow, 5-ribbed achene, rarely seen in cultivation.

Quick care: full sun (≥6 hrs direct; more = more blooms). Needs very well-drained soil (sandy-loam ideal); tolerates poor, rocky soil but not waterlogging—root rot is the main killer. Slightly acidic pH 5.5–6.5 preferred. Water deeply but infrequently: let top 3–5 cm dry between waterings; established plants are very drought-tolerant; overwatering leads to leafy growth, few bracts. Thrives in heat (20–35 °C/68–95 °F); frost-tender—damage below ∼4 °C (40 °F); hardy USDA 9–11 (zone 9 with protection). Feed lightly: low-nitrogen, higher phosphorus/potassium (e.g., tomato/bloom booster) every 4–6 weeks in growing season; too much nitrogen = foliage over flowers. Prune after each flush (late winter/early spring for shaping); blooms on new growth, so tip-prune to encourage branching. Provide strong support (trellis, arbor, wall) if grown as vine; can be trained as shrub, hedge, standard, or bonsai. Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings (summer) or layering. Pests generally few: aphids, mealybugs, scale, leaf miners, caterpillars; control with strong spray or neem. Wear gloves—thorns are sharp.
