Banana — Musa spp. (Musaceae). Common edible types derive from Musa acuminata (A genome, e.g., Cavendish AAA), M. balbisiana (B genome), and hybrids (M. × paradisiaca, plantains). Native to tropical SE Asia; cultivated worldwide in the tropics.

Product Description

A giant herbaceous perennial, 2–8 m (6–26 ft) tall (dwarf types 1.5–2.5 m). What looks like a “trunk” is a pseudostem made of tightly wrapped leaf sheaths; the true stem (rhizome/corm) is underground. Leaves are spirally arranged, paddle-shaped, bright green, 1.5–3 m × 0.5–1 m; juvenile leaves of some cultivars show red/purple blotches. After 10–15 months a true stem grows up through the pseudostem and emerges as an inflorescence (“banana heart”)—a large, pendant spike with overlapping purple-red bracts. Female flowers at the base develop into fruit; male flowers occur toward the tip. Fruit are elongated berries, 10–25 cm long, borne in hands (tiers) that form a bunch (often 50–150 fingers). Dessert types ripen from green to yellow (or red in some cultivars), seedless and sweet; cooking types (plantains) are starchy. Each pseudostem flowers and fruits once, then dies; new suckers (pups) from the rhizome continue the clump.

Quick care: full sun (6–8 hrs; light afternoon shade in very hot, dry sites). Warm 20–35 °C (68–95 °F); USDA 10–11 for fruiting outdoors; 9b with protection; leaves damaged at ∼0 °C, pseudostem around –2 °C. Soil: rich, deep, moisture-retentive yet well-drained loam; pH 5.5–7.0; add lots of compost. Water deeply and consistently—keep soil evenly moist; mulch heavily (10–15 cm) but keep mulch off the base. Heavy feeder: apply balanced fertilizer or organic liquid every 2–4 weeks in warm months; ensure potassium for fruiting. Keep 1 main pseudostem plus 1–2 successor pups; remove extras. Stake or prop heavy bunches; bag to reduce sunburn/birds. Harvest when fruits are plump and angles fill out (still green) and ripen indoors. Propagate by separating pups in spring. Watch for aphids, spider mites (indoors), banana weevil, nematodes, and diseases like Panama (Fusarium) and sigatoka—use clean planting material and good drainage.
