Areca Palm in 8″ Pot

A clustering, evergreen palm in the Arecaceae family, native to Madagascar. Indoors it forms a graceful clump of multiple slender, cane-like stems (2–3 in thick) that emerge from the base, each ringed with leaf scars and often yellow-green to golden near the base—hence “golden cane.” The fronds are pinnate (feather-like), arching, 1–2 m long indoors, with 40–60 pairs of narrow, lance-shaped leaflets that create a soft, butterfly-wing silhouette. Mature height outdoors is 6–12 m (20–39 ft), but as a houseplant it typically stays 1–2 m (3–6 ft), growing about 15–25 cm per year. Rarely flowers indoors.

Quick care: bright, indirect light (tolerates partial shade; avoid harsh direct sun which scorches leaves, but give at least a few hours of bright light to prevent stretching). Keep soil evenly moist—water when the top 2–3 cm feels dry; don’t let it sit in water (root rot) or dry out completely (leaf tips brown). Prefers warmth (18–27 °C / 65–80 °F), high humidity (50–70 %; mist, pebble tray or humidifier helps), and well-drained, slightly acidic potting mix (peat/perlite/sand). Feed monthly with a balanced palm fertilizer in spring–summer. Repot every 2–3 years. Pet-friendly (non-toxic), excellent air-purifier, and sensitive to drafts and fluoride/salts (use filtered water if tips brown).
