Araucaria plant 2.5ft in 8″ Pot

A symmetrical evergreen conifer with a straight trunk and tiered whorls of horizontal branches that give a perfect pyramidal outline. Indoors a 2.5 ft (75 cm) specimen is a juvenile plant: usually a single central leader with 4–6 tiers of branches spaced 10–15 cm apart. Bark is grey-brown, slightly flaky on older stems. Foliage is dimorphic: juvenile leaves are awl-shaped, soft, bright green, 7–12 mm long, slightly incurved; adult leaves (appear as it matures) are scale-like, ovate, 4–6 mm, densely overlapping. The 2.5 ft size has mostly juvenile foliage—soft, needle-like, arranged spirally along the branches, giving a feathery look. Branches are flexible, not stiff enough to hold heavy ornaments. Growth is slow indoors—about 5–15 cm (2–6 in) per year; a 2.5 ft plant may be 3–5 years old. Outdoors in the tropics it becomes a 60–200 ft tree; in containers it tops out around 6–8 ft after many years.

Quick care: bright indirect light to some gentle sun (east or filtered south/west window); 4–6 hrs bright light keeps it dense—too little light causes leggy, drooping tiers and needle drop. Turn the pot weekly for symmetry. Temperatures 15–24 °C (60–75 °F) days, 13–18 °C (55–65 °F) nights; cooler winter rest (13–16 °C) helps. Avoid drafts and heat/AC vents; not frost-hardy (damage <10 °C/50 °F). Humidity 40–60%—mist occasionally or use a pebble tray; dry air causes brown tips. Soil: acidic to neutral, well-drained mix (potting soil 50% + peat 20% + coarse sand/perlite 30%). Keep evenly moist but not soggy; water when top 2–3 cm dry, let drain fully; reduce in winter. Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer with balanced or acid-loving fertilizer at half strength; none in winter. Repot only every 3–4 years (likes being slightly root-bound); top-dress yearly. Don’t prune the leader—cutting the top stops upward growth; remove only dead lower branches. Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, root rot from overwatering. Non-toxic but sap can irritate. Makes a great tabletop “Christmas tree” and airy architectural accent.
