Large Ficus Bonsai — typically Ficus microcarpa (syn. F. retusa, F. ginseng, F. ‘Tiger Bark’), Moraceae (fig/mulberry family). Common names: Chinese Banyan, Indian Laurel, Ginseng Ficus, Banyan Fig bonsai. Native to tropical/subtropical Asia (India, Sri Lanka, SE Asia, S China, Taiwan, northern Australia).

Product Description

A mature “large” specimen is usually 12–25 years old, 45–75 cm (18–30 in) tall including pot (extra-large can reach 90 cm/35 in). The standout feature is the trunk: thick, contorted, often with pronounced taper, surface roots (nebari) spreading like a buttress, and bark that’s smooth grey with reddish-brown tiger-stripe flecks or silvery striations. Many large ficus bonsai display a swollen, pot-bellied base (especially ‘Ginseng’ grafts) and may develop aerial roots in high humidity that thicken into secondary trunks. Branching is ramified and densely twiggy; canopy forms a broad, layered dome of glossy, dark-green, oval to elliptic leaves 4–10 cm (2–4 in) long (smaller on ‘Tiger Bark’/microcarpa forms, ∼2–5 cm). Leaves are waxy, alternate, with short petioles; new growth often emerges rosy-red before hardening to green. Milky latex is present in stems. Fruit (tiny figs) rarely forms indoors.

Why ficus is popular for large bonsai: very tolerant, fast recovery, back-buds readily on old wood, tolerates heavy pruning and root work, and adapts well to indoor conditions (one of the most forgiving tropical bonsai). Long-lived—well-kept trees can live decades (specimens 25–35 yrs are common; exceptional trees can reach 50+ yrs).

Quick care: bright, indirect light (south/east window) or filtered sun; can take some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon scorching. Warm 18–27 °C (65–80 °F); minimum ∼12 °C (54 °F); leaf drop below ∼10 °C (50 °F) or with sudden drafts. Soil: free-draining bonsai mix (akadama/pumice/lava rock, or 50% potting mix + 30% perlite + 20% cocopeat). Water when top 2–3 cm dry—keep evenly moist, never let dry out completely; in summer every 1–2 days, winter every 3–4 days; mist foliage for humidity (50–70%). Feed every 2–4 weeks in growing season (spring–early autumn) with balanced liquid fertilizer; reduce in winter. Prune new shoots back to 2–4 leaves after they extend 6–8 leaves to maintain silhouette and encourage ramification; wire during active growth (spring–summer) but check often—bark marks easily. Repot every 2–3 years (younger trees) or 4–5 years (older large specimens) in spring, trimming roots lightly. Watch for scale, mealybugs, spider mites; leaf drop often signals relocation stress or overwatering. Mildly toxic sap (irritant). Ideal indoor focal point, office, or patio (above 10 °C).
