Ficus Panda — Ficus microcarpa ‘Panda’ (often listed as F. retusa ‘Panda’), Moraceae (fig family). Common names: Panda Ficus, Indian Laurel Fig, Round-leaf Ficus. Cultivar derived from F. microcarpa (Chinese Banyan), native to tropical/subtropical Asia (India, SE Asia, S China).

Product Description

A compact evergreen shrub/tree with a dense, rounded canopy. In landscapes it can reach 8–15 ft (2.5–4.5 m) and up to 25–30 ft (7–9 m) in ideal conditions; indoors it’s kept 1–4 ft (0.3–1.2 m). As a bonsai or “ginseng” style, the trunk is thick, often gnarled, with smooth grey bark; the cultivar’s hallmark is its leaves: small, thick, waxy, round to broadly elliptic, 3–6 cm × 2–4 cm, glossy dark green with slightly recurved margins—rounder and fleshier than typical F. microcarpa. Leaves are alternate, densely set along short internodes, giving a tight, bushy look. Branching is fine and highly ramified, easy to shape for topiary/hedge/bonsai. Aerial roots may appear in high humidity but are less prolific than wild banyans. Figs are tiny (5–10 mm), green to purplish, rarely produced indoors. The plant exudes milky latex when cut.

Quick care: bright indirect light to some gentle morning sun (east/south window filtered); tolerates partial shade but becomes sparse; avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch. Warm 18–27 °C (65–80 °F); keep above 15 °C (59 °F) (leaf drop below 10 °C/50 °F). Soil: fertile, well-drained mix (potting soil 50% + perlite/coarse sand 30% + compost/cocopeat 20%); pH 6–7.5. Water when top 2–3 cm dry—keep evenly moist in growing season, reduce in winter; don’t let sit in water (root rot). Likes 50–70% humidity; mist or use a pebble tray to keep leaves glossy and deter spider mites. Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring–summer with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Prune in early spring to maintain shape and encourage density; can be trimmed hard and shaped for topiary/bonsai. Repot every 1–2 years (bonsai 2–3 years) to refresh soil; ensure good drainage. Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings or air-layering. Watch for scale, mealybugs, spider mites, aphids; leaf drop occurs with sudden changes in light/temperature or overwatering. Mildly toxic if ingested (latex). Great for hedges, topiary, containers, bonsai, and low-maintenance indoor specimen.
