Golden Barrel Cactus

A slow-growing, solitary (later may offset) barrel cactus that forms a perfect sphere when young, elongating to a broad barrel with age—up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall and 0.4–0.8 m (1.5–2.5 ft) wide after many decades; typically seen at 20–40 cm (8–16 in) in pots. The pale-green stem has 20–35 sharp, pronounced ribs. Areoles are yellow/woolly when young, later grey; they bear 8–10 radial spines (3 cm/1.2 in) and 3–5 central spines (up to 5 cm/2 in), all straight or slightly curved, golden-yellow (occasionally white), giving the glowing “golden” look. Mature plants (often 20+ years) develop a woolly crown and produce a ring of funnel-shaped yellow flowers (4–6 cm/2 in) at the top in summer; fruit is woolly, inconspicuous.

Quick care: full sun (6–8 hrs direct) for best spine color and compact shape; indoors use the brightest south/west window or grow light. Hardy USDA 9–11 (briefly to –6 °C/20 °F, but protect from hard frost). Soil must be very well-drained: gritty cactus mix with 50–80% mineral grit (coarse sand/pumice/perlite). Water deeply but infrequently—soak, then let dry completely (every 2–3 weeks in hot weather, every 4–6 weeks in cool, almost none in winter dormancy). Low humidity (<50%). Feed 2–3 times in spring–summer with low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer (optional). Repot every 3–4 years; use tongs, newspaper, and heavy gloves to handle spines. Pests uncommon (watch mealybugs); main problem is rot from overwatering. Great specimen for rock gardens, xeriscaping, patios, and containers
