Product Description

A vigorous, woody perennial vine/climber that can be trained as a rambling shrub. Fast-growing, reaches 6–9 m (20–30 ft) on support (dwarf/compact forms 2–3 m). Stems are slender, flexible, initially green turning woody brown, with slightly spiny leaf axils on older wood. Leaves are opposite (sometimes sub-opposite), simple, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, 7–15 cm × 3–6 cm, bright glossy green, with an acute tip and entire margin; underside may be slightly hairy. The showy feature is the pendulous clusters of tubular, star-shaped flowers (4–7 cm long) borne in dense racemes. A single bloom changes color over 3 days—opens white/cream at dusk (to attract hawk moths), turns pink the next day, then deep red/crimson on the third, so each cluster displays white-pink-red together. Flowers are intensely fragrant, sweet honey-like, especially in evening. Fruit is a dry, 5-angled drupe 2–3 cm, rarely seen in cultivation.

Quick care: full sun (6–8 hrs) for best flowering; tolerates partial shade but blooms less. Warm tropical/subtropical climate (ideal 20–35 °C/68–95 °F); tolerates brief mild cold down to ∼10–12 °C (50–54 °F) but may drop leaves; frost tender. Soil: well-drained, fertile loam with organic matter; pH 6.0–7.5. Water regularly when soil top 2–3 cm dries—daily in peak summer, every 3–4 days in cooler weather; avoid waterlogging. Feed lightly with balanced fertilizer monthly in growing season (spring–autumn); avoid high nitrogen (reduces flowering). Provide sturdy support—trellis, pergola, fence, arch; can be pruned hard after flowering to control size and keep bushy (also grown as a pot shrub with regular trimming). Propagate by layering, stem cuttings, or root suckers. Pests: generally hardy; watch for aphids, mealybugs, spider mites; leaf spots in humid conditions. Medicinally used in folk practice (leaves for skin issues/headache, seeds/fruit for worms/diarrhea), but use caution. Great for privacy screens, pergolas, balconies, and to attract bees,
