Brazilian Wood (Lucky Wood) — Dracaena fragrans (often sold as D. fragrans ‘Massangeana’ or ‘Lindenii’). Family: Asparagaceae. Common names: Brazilian Wood, Lucky Wood, Corn Plant, Mass Cane, Fortune Plant. Native to tropical Africa (not Brazil; the trade name is misleading), but now ubiquitous as an indoor “lucky” log.

Product Description

A slow-growing evergreen shrub with a thick, cane-like woody stem (often sold as a short log/segment). Leaves form a rosette at the top: long, arching, sword-shaped, 30–90 cm (1–3 ft) long and 5–10 cm wide, glossy green with a central yellow–lime stripe (in ‘Massangeana’). Height indoors 0.6–2 m (2–6 ft); can reach 6 m in the wild. Aerial roots may appear at nodes. Flowers (rare indoors) are small, fragrant, white, in clusters on a long spike; fruit is a small orange berry. All parts contain saponins—mildly toxic to pets/humans if ingested.

Quick care: bright, indirect light is best (east/north window; avoid harsh midday sun which scorches). Tolerates medium/low light but growth slows and variegation fades. Soil: loose, well-draining mix (houseplant soil + perlite/bark). Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 in) of soil is dry—typically every 7–14 days; keep evenly moist but never soggy; reduce in winter. Sensitive to fluoride/chlorine → use filtered/distilled water to avoid brown leaf tips. Can also be grown in water: place the cane base in 3–5 cm of clean water, change every 7–10 days. Temperature 18–28 °C (65–82 °F); avoid <14 °C (57 °F) and cold drafts. Humidity moderate; mist or wipe leaves every 2 weeks to remove dust. Feed monthly in spring–summer with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength; skip in fall–winter. Prune yellow/dry leaves; cut back the cane to encourage branching. Repot every 2–3 years. Propagate by stem cuttings in water or soil (include at least one node). Pests: spider mites, mealybugs, scale—treat with neem spray. Easy-care, air-purifying foliage; popular as a “good-luck” gift in India and SE Asia.
