Devil’s Backbone (Green) in 6″Pot

A succulent shrub in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), native to tropical Americas (Florida, Mexico, Caribbean to South America). It’s known for its fleshy, green, zig-zag stems that grow in a back-and-forth pattern, giving the “devil’s backbone” look. Leaves are ovate, pointed, glossy, and variegated—green centers with creamy-white to pale-green edges (often flushing pink/red in strong light or cool weather). Leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. Outdoors it can reach 1–2 m (3–6 ft) over time; indoors it stays smaller (30–60 cm).

Quick care: bright light (some direct sun gives the best variegation and pink tones), very well-drained cactus/succulent mix. Water moderately in spring-summer, letting the top 3–5 cm dry between waterings; keep barely moist in winter. Drought-tolerant; leaf drop happens if too dry or too wet. Prefers warmth (18–27 °C); protect from cold (<10 °C). Feed monthly in growing season. Caution: all parts contain milky latex that irritates skin/eyes and is toxic if ingested—wear gloves when handling and keep away from pets/kids.
